Peony Jade Restaurant

It's the time of the year to celebrate Father's day. This year, we went to Peony Jade Restaurant to check out their Ala-Carte Buffet. It has been quite a while since we visited this restaurant, I usually go there to attend weddings.. Here's what we ordered from the buffet menu.

- Lobster Salad

The Lobster Salad is appetising, the lobster is fresh and goes well with the mayonise and honeydew.

- Peking Duck

The Peking Duck is pretty good, it is roasted till the skin is nice and crispy making it taste very fragrant.

- Crispy Soft Shell Crab

Pretty normal.

- Braised Superior Shark Fin with Crabmeat

The Braised Shark Fin has smooth and thich te, I guess this dish will gradually be emoved from the menus now that many countries are begining to discourage people to protect the sharks.

- Drunken Prawn with Herbs

The Prawns are fresh and succulent and you can taste some mild herbs.

- Deep Fried Soon Hock

The Fried Soon Hock was kind of disappointing. You can taste the lack of freshness even though it's deep fried. I must comment that the doneness was very good though -  very crispy.

- Stir Fried Venison with Black Pepper

The Stir Fried Venison is pretty good, the venison is nice and tender and the black pepper sauce gives the dish a little more spice that makes it tasty.

- Fried Carrot Cake with XO Chilli Sauce

The Fried Carrot Cake is delicious, the carrot cake is nice and soft and goes very well with the XO Chilli Sauce making the dish tasty and spicy.

- Char Siew Bao

The Char Siew Bao is a must try, the outer crust is nice and soft while the inside is filled with char siew and the char siew sauce that is waiting to explode. You must order this dish if it's available.

- Siew Mai

I find that the Siew Mai is pretty normal but I must comment that the ingredients are very fresh.

- Har Gao (Prawn Dumpling)

I'm not a har gao lover and I find this dish very normal. The ingredients are very fresh though.

Abalone with Mushroom and vegetables

The Abalone goes well with the abalone sauce that gives the dish a little more flavour, the mushroom is also very fragrant and goes well with the abalone sauce.

Overall, I find that the food is pretty good but kindof pricey.

Old Empire Gastrobar

Today I was going to check out this restaurant called Old Empire Gastrobar. Heard that they serve over 76 types of beer. I ordered a Marston's Pedigree Pale Ale for a start. Here's what I ordered to go with my beer:

- Tomato Soup

The Tomato Soup is tasty and has a strong taste of the tomato. It is just like drinking tomato puree. This dish is very appetising and goes very well with the focaccia bread.

- Grilled Chicken with Portabella Mushrooms

The Grilled Chicken is very tasty and is grilled to perfection, the skin is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The doneness is one of the better ones I have tasted. The Portabella Mushrooms makes the dish very fragrant. Instead of the usual fries,  the pan fried cucumber and baby potatoes makes the dish  a healthier choice.

- Brownie and Ice Cream

The Brownie is warm, soft and not too sweet, it goes well with the vanilla ice cream. What a heavenly dessert to end the meal with.

Overall, I find that the food is pretty good and the restaurant is a nice place to chill out at, especially for beer lovers. Cheers!

The Tavern Pub & Restaurant

I made a reservation for two during restaurant week at this restaurant, The Tavern Pub & Restaurant. This place is well known and frequently patronised by the rich and famous. It has a cosy cottage decor that makes you feel at home. The waiters are also very attentive and always waiting to serve you. Hmm...maybe because the restaurant wasn't crowded that night. I ordered the set dinner which consists of an appetiser or soup, choice of main course and desserts followed by coffee or tea. For appetisers, we ordered the Salad with Smoked Chicken, the lettuce in the salad was nice and crisp and the dish was garnished with croutons. The Smoked Chicken is tender and very thinly sliced. Next was the Soursop Sorbet which was cold and refreshing to chill our palette. As for the main course, we ordered a Pasta with Prawn Cubes and a Ribeye Steak. The pasta was pretty normal cause I don't think it's their specialty. As for the steak, it was nicely grilled with a little charred taste giving it the original beefy taste, the steak was nice and juicy. The dessert was Chestnut Puree with Vanilla Ice Cream. I find the dessert very unique, the combination was a pleasant surprise when you coat the Chestnut Puree with Vanilla Ice Cream. A couple of their signature dishes that are highly recommended are the Pan-Fried Fresh Goose Liver, Australian Ribeye Steak and Raclette Cheese. However, I find that the price is kindof pricey, no wonder it's for the rich and famous.
